Veda (Veda, Vedic, Vedas , Oldest Veda, 4 vedas, four Vedas, rigved, atharva veda, yajur veda, sama veda) is a Sanskrit word from the root, vid, meaning “to know.” Thus, veda means “knowledge” or “wisdom.”

They are derived from the ancient Indo-Aryan culture of the Indian Subcontinent and began as an oral tradition that was passed down through generations before finally being written in Vedic Sanskrit between 1500 and 500 BCE (Before Common Era). Spiritual Motive

The Vedas are structured in four different collections containing hymns, poems, prayers, and religious instruction. Spiritual Motive

The Indian caste system is based on a fable from the Vedas about the sacrifice of the deity Purusha. Spiritual Motive

The Vedas existed in oral form and were passed down from master to student for generations until they were committed to writing between c. 1500 — c. 500 BCE (the so-called Vedic Period) in India. They were carefully preserved orally as masters would have students memorize them forwards and backwards with emphasis on exact pronunciation in order to keep what was originally heard intact. Spiritual Motive

  1. Rig Veda” — the most important Veda. It contains mantras and hymns for happiness, health and wisdom, including the famous Gayatri mantra.
  2. Sama Veda” — a collection of musical hymns and mantras that form the basis for kirtan, the devotional chanting of Bhakti yoga.
  3. Yajur Veda” — the instructional handbook for the technical aspects of ceremonies, sacrificial acts and worship of the deities. This is used by Vedic priests.
  4. Atharva Veda” — a collection of magical rites and spells to dispel demons and disease, as well as hymns for marriage and cremation.

Each of these is further divided into types of text included within them:

The Upanishads are the best known and most often read of the Vedas because their discourse is presented in dialogue/narrative form and they were the first to be translated into other languages. The four Vedas, conversely, are considered the literal sounds of the Divine which, when recited or sung, recreate the primal vibrations of the universe. Accordingly, they are actually impossible to translate and what one reads in a translation should be understood as a paraphrase at best. Spiritual Motive
