(Veda, Vedic, Vedas , , 4 vedas, four Vedas, rigved, atharva veda, yajur veda, sama veda) is a Sanskrit word from the root, vid, meaning “to know.” Thus, means “knowledge” or “wisdom.”

They are derived from the ancient Indo-Aryan culture of the Indian Subcontinent and began as an oral tradition that was passed down through generations before finally being written in Vedic Sanskrit between 1500 and 500 BCE (Before Common Era).

The Vedas are structured in four different collections containing hymns, poems, prayers, and religious instruction.

The Indian caste system is based on a fable from the Vedas about the sacrifice of the deity Purusha.

The Four Vedas are:

The Vedas existed in oral form and were passed down from master to student for generations until they were committed to writing between c. 1500 — c. 500 BCE (the so-called Vedic Period) in India. They were carefully preserved orally as masters would have students memorize them forwards and backwards with emphasis on exact pronunciation in order to keep what was originally heard intact.

  1. ” — the most important Veda. It contains mantras and hymns for happiness, health and wisdom, including the famous Gayatri mantra.
  2. ” — a collection of musical hymns and mantras that form the basis for kirtan, the devotional chanting of Bhakti yoga.

The are the best known and most often read of the because their discourse is presented in dialogue/narrative form and they were the first to be translated into other languages. The four Vedas, conversely, are considered the literal sounds of the Divine which, when recited or sung, recreate the primal vibrations of the universe.
